| Zenith 1981 stereo..... |
[15 May 2009|09:39am] |

I picked this up yesterday at the thrift for $10 including the speakers......
After a bit of a clean it looked fantastic, it just caught my eye in the shop as a bit of quality kit......and i was right it sounds fantastic, these things were not cheap when they were new, from what i can find out they retailed at someting like $400 back in the day......and you can tell......
The speakers are quite good quality, not the usual lightweight masonite cases with one crappy speaker in them, these are 2 way with a bass port (the grille is none removable tho....shame) and they sound very nice indeed....
The BSR (made in England) record deck is 99% seized up, and i am trying to get the platter off to oil it all.......but no luck with that yet...
The cassette deck runs 95% perfectly, and its stereo recordings are amazingly good !!!
Oh and its got an 8 track player/recorder as well......but i dont have any 8 track carts.......yet, i think i know a local thrift with some in.......it they havent trashed them !!!!!

The Lens is awesome tho........propper glassware......

Of course, Nana lets her sleep in our bed, even if I can't sleep. Then again, I let her eat in bed, instead of only in the kitchen. So yeah, we're even. (No one is counting.)

| Sony WaveCatcher........... |
[11 Mar 2009|04:29pm] |

This is the AM antenna that i managed to find in the trash that came with my Sony Receiver....
Trust Sony to give a ferrite bar in a plastic case a fancy name.............
|
|
| Turntable update......... |
[10 Mar 2009|03:34pm] |
I noticed a couple of parts missing from the turntable......one of the hinges and one of the clear plastic centering guides......
So.....back i went into the trash in the general area where the turntable had been dumped....and yes i found the bits......

So now the dustcover works........and where there was a hole there is now a plastic thingy.....its 99% complete.....the 45 center adaptor is missing.......
Oh and i bought the massive box of records that seemed to have come in with the hifi seperates when they were donated to the shop..........so i have an instant classical collection......
Pics of records later.........

| The finishing touch............... |
[10 Mar 2009|10:24am] |

I went in this morning to buy the turntable that had been in the shop for like 3 weeks.......
It had gone !!!!!!!!!!
ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGhhhhh!!!!
The shop lady asked me why i was curled up in a ball on the floor wailing, and after i had pulled myself together i asked her where the Sony turntable had gone.......
Oh we threw it in the trash she calmly said.........WTF !!!
She said i could dive in the dumpster to rescue it if i wanted.............so in i went....
And there it is works fine, the stylus sounds ok, but it could be gouging a furrow into my K-Tel "20 solid hits" as i speak......
So the turntable cost me nothing, well..... just the price of a tetanus shot..after diving into the dumpster....
And i found the AM antenna for my amp and the manuals for the amp and the CD player in the dumpster as well.......
What a week.........

|
| The finished (for now) $12 system........... |
[09 Mar 2009|04:18pm] |

I might add a Sony Turntable.......i have no LP's but someone left a huge box of them at the store......so maybe.........
I am more than a little pleased with myself.....i have put together a system using high quality components from Three decades, the 70's 80's and the 90's......for a pittance.....
And it sounds superb..........
The room is in the process of renovation BTW......hence the lack of wallpaper and trim.....
|
|
| The final part of the system.................... |
[09 Mar 2009|01:13pm] |
The speakers...........

I needed some speakers to complete my thrift store Hi Fi, so this morning i wandered into the shop and preceded to have a gander at the rag tag collection of boxes on offer, after disgarding the magnavox and sears flimsy offerings my attention was instantly grabbed by these....
Early 1970's Celestion "County" 2 way speakers....Made in England no less !!!!
My mood was a bit spoiled by damage to one of the speakers....

It looks like something on the top of the speaker maybe caught fire and was doused with copious amounts of water to put it out....hence the damage to the top,and the back (not shown)
Anyway these speakers are rare, and so i thought i would chance them.....if they were no good they could go in the trash.....
So i got them in, cut 2 pieces of speaker cable (picked that up in the shop as well with the speakers) and connected them to the Sony receiver ................
Perfect, well they sound perfect to me.......no blown drivers.....no rattles (i tightened the drivers up anyway) and they have been on for a few hours to loosen them up......sounding better all the time....
Oh and the price ? $2.......not bad i think a bit of work on the damaged one should bring it back to a decent condition......
So my Hi-Fi in all has cost $12 so far........
|
|
| OK i got the receiver ................ |
[08 Mar 2009|05:22pm] |

It was still there so i picked it up and headed to the counter..."how much" i asked "Five smackers" Dan replied....."you got yourself a deal".....i left the shop with my prize....
The Sony STR AV470 was only sold in Canada and Australia because of legal challenges to Sonys multi standard AM Stereo chip, so i guess they had a pretty small market.....
All push button.....not a real volume knob to be seen...........but packed with high end features and seems to work fine........
I have just remembered what it reminds me of.....a Sony Betamax VCR i had, the colors and the buttons were just the same !!!
Now for some speakers...................

| Its saturday, so it must be yard sale store day !!!!!!!! |
[07 Mar 2009|05:56pm] |
As M was out visiting her friend B for most of the day, i decided to have a stroll to the aforementioned yard sale store and see what was in......while i was about it i took back a non working electric typewriter i had bought during the week and got a credit for it......within seconds i had used the credit to buy this.............

The black 5 disc CD player(WITH original remote i might add) on the top not the falling apart Sony receiver on the bottom....
$10 (well $5 but its a long story) and its allmost mint, made in 1992 and still sounds great......such a change from MP3's.....
Tomorrow i am going to try and bag a mid 90's Sony AV amp to go with it......stay tuned......

Oh and as you may have noticed the wall is not yet finished.....when the weather gets warmer.....

| Me......Six years ago...... |
[02 Mar 2009|11:22am] |

It was just pointed out by my mate Chris, that it is more or less 6 years to the day since we were invited to visit Abbey Road studios in London......and visit the hallowed studio 2 (where the Beatles recorded)
I still have that fleece, i got it in Norway............
|
|
| Patrolman 6.......the inside story....... |
[27 Feb 2009|01:36pm] |

The interesting thing about the circuit of the receiver the lack of IC's, there are only Two.....the rest of the circuit is discrete ......that shows the bulk of the design of the radio was probably Ten years old when this radio was new in 1977.
The VHF HI band has a bit of a problem with (i think) AFC making it hard to tune signals in........i will have to poke around a bit, see if i can cure it......
Notice the liberal use of wax to stop settings drifting......its all over the place.......and one things for sure.....it seems to work....
